Radial Shockwave Therapy

As of January 2025, Emitting Wellness is now equipped with the BTL Radial Shockwave Elite model.

Radial Shockwave is the number one choice for treating the following problems:

  • Muscle strains and tears
  • Tendinopathies and tendonitis such as golfers and tennis elbow, patellar tendonitis, Achilles tendonitis etc
  • Bursitis
  • Arthritis
  • Calcification
  • Trigger points
  • Heel spurs
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Spasticity
  • Tenosynovitis
  • Anterior tibial syndrome
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Finger and toe tendon and ligament problems

How it works:

Radial Shockwave uses a high pressure acoustic wave that spreads through the tissue to reach the impaired area.

The shockwaves cause cell stimulation and growth factor release. Cells proliferate and differentiate and this results in tissue regeneration.

This leads to growth of new vessels, improved blood supply and tissue repair.

Tendons are repaired with growth factor and fibroblast proliferation and this leads to increased collagen synthesis and tendon regeneration.

Fractures are healed by stimulating bone morphogenetic protein, leading to mesenchymal cell differentiation and osteogenesis (bone formation).

Calcification is eliminated with the growth of new lymphatic vessels and these vessels reabsorb calcium deposits in the tissue.

Pain relief: Thick nerve fibres block the pain in the spinal gate. Shockwave decreases substance P which is a mediator for pain transmission.

Shockwave increases circulation, reduces local ischemia and disrupts the muscle stiffness-pain cycle.

Shockwave reverses chronic inflammation by increasing the activity of mast cells.

What does it feel like?

Patients feel little zaps, it feels zippy! But is it is not painful.

The most sensitive areas are those around bone, least sensitive where there is more tissue

The shockwave is always used to achieve therapy within the patient's pain threshold

It takes approximately 3-6 minutes per area

Most conditions need 2-6 treatments

Common side effects are:

  • a bit of swelling in the area that does not last long
  • itching or mild loss of sensation that does not last long
  • Redness in the area that does not last long
  • usually most patients feel immediate pain relief but some will experience slight tenderness

When can Shockwave not be used:
  • People under 18 years of age (shockwave affects growth plates)
  • Pregnant women
  • Acute inflammation
  • pacemaker
  • neurostimulator devices or defibrillators
  • cortisone in the area (if less than 6 weeks ago)
  • Blood disorders
  • malignant tissue/tumors
  • anticoagulants
  • sensory deficit in the area
  • around the eyes, myocardium (over the heart), spinal cord, gonads, kidneys, liver, head/neck area (neck muscles in the shoulder are fine)
